During his tenure at Google \u2014 first overseeing the design of Android \u2014 the vice president of design watched Google\u2019s operating system capture more than <a class=\"bv hc iy iz ja jb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/236027\/global-smartphone-os-market-share-of-android\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">85%<\/a> of the global smartphone market. Duarte has <a class=\"bv hc iy iz ja jb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3038509\/designers-of-android-and-dropbox-on-the-smartphone-of-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">likened his own work<\/a> in mainstreaming these addictive devices to that of an arms dealer \u2014 \u201cI just make the guns! I didn\u2019t make you guys shoot each other!\u201d \u2014 but he\u2019s also not slowing down.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8a50\" class=\"jc jd ep ay je b fj jf fl jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn eh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">After pioneering <a class=\"bv hc iy iz ja jb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3032378\/googles-new-improved-android-will-deliver-a-unified-design-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Material Design<\/a> \u2014 a user interface metaphor that\u2019s helped de-uglify and unify Google\u2019s products \u2014 he\u2019s here to stump for a new vision of Google\u2019s computing future, one that extends well beyond the smartphone. \u201cWe\u2019ve been calling this idea ambient computing,\u201d says Duarte. \u201cWhere you are able to reach services wherever you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"8614\" class=\"jc jd ep ay je b fj jf fl jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn eh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Ambient computing \u2014 also dubbed ubiquitous computing or <a class=\"bv hc iy iz ja jb\" href=\"https:\/\/homes.di.unimi.it\/~boccignone\/GiuseppeBoccignone_webpage\/IUM2_files\/weiser-calm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">calm computing<\/a> \u2014 isn\u2019t a new idea.
